Put your thinking caps on.  We are looking at the deep truths of our faith and why they are important to our personal faith as well as our church.  We will also be reading from the Westminster faith documents.

Out of the Past

This is a sermon on Peter being reinstated by Jesus.  I say three things- Jesus undoes Peter's past.  Jesus calls Peter to a future of serving others.  Finally, Jesus calls Peter to sacrifice for God. I think that God says these same things to us today.  We need to hear this so badly because so many of us hang on to shame and think we are not worthy of joy in our lives.

The Freedom of Self-Forgetfullness

This is a stand-alone sermon I did based on Timothy Keller's work called The Freedom of Self-Forgetfullness.  This is a book/sermon that I read in the Fall that I have been thinking a lot about.  It was an honor to take it and make it my own for my people.  I think these are some very important ideas and I hope they really mess with you.

Jesus in the Book of Ruth

  This sermon wraps up my series on the book of Ruth.  It was preached for Palm Sunday.  The big question that the people are asking when Jesus comes into town is- Who is this?  I look at several characterstic of who Jesus reveal Himself to be on Palm Sunday.  I then look back to see those same traits portrayed in the book of Ruth.  Finally, I look ahead to see those traits at the crucifixion.

Lessons from the Book of Ruth

Having gone through the book of Ruth chapter by chapter, I now turn my attention to lessons from the book of Ruth.  Ruth has so much depth and such great characters that there was a lot I could not talk about on the first pass through.  In this sermon, I talk about grace and how grace changes everything for us.

Redeeming Ruth Part 4

The book of Ruth is so much more than a really old and beautiful love story.  It is a story of survival and loyal friendship.  Ultimately it asks the question--"Where is God when we are hurting?"  Is God a bully, or is God a loyal friend and redeemer? Here we explore chapter 4 and the conclusion to the story.

  The book of Ruth is so much more than a really old and beautiful love story.  It is a story of survival and loyal friendship.  Ultimately it asks the question--"Where is God when we are hurting?"  Is God a bully, or is God a loyal friend and redeemer? This is a sermon that was not meant for podcasts but was really focused on the people in the pews.  I used a video and then went right into communion.  The sacrament really worked as my conclusion to the sermon.  I wrote the communion liturgy from the book of Ruth.  It worked very well in worship but did not come acrosss well in the recording.  The volume was different as I moved to play the movie and then to the communion table.  It worked in person, though, and only makes sense together so I have left it all in the audio recording.  If you want to watch the video for yourself, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naRCfl8oCos.

For Lent I am preaching through the book of Ruth.  This is so much more than a really old and beautiful love story.  It is a story of survival and loyal friendship.  Ultimately it asks the question--"Where is God when we are hurting?"  Is God a bully, or is God a loyal friend and redeemer? This first chapter sets the stage for the book and invites us to feel the emotions and the danger of these widowed women.
